We were pretty surprised when we recieved this press release with the headline "Consumer Reports Shares Evidence Confirming Benefits of Extended Service Plans."If Consumer Reports' latest product research was making a stronger case for purchasing extended warranties that would be pretty big news since for years, the magazine has advised consumers that extended warranties (also called extended service plans) just aren't worth it for the vast majority of purchases. The press release came from NEW -- a company that says it sells extended warranties for Amazon.com, Target, Walmart and a bunch of other major retailers. The problem? Consumer Reports hasn't changed its tune: it still advises shoppers not buy extended warranties in the vast majority of cases.
